10 World History

Year 10, World History is a semester course that analyses of the short-term and long-term impacts of developments and/or movements in the modern world. Insightful and critical analysis of ways in which societies in the modern world have been shaped by both internal and external forces and challenges: The three topics examine in some depth the impact of decolonisation, revolution, war, dictatorship and persecution on the modern world.  

Topic 1. Communist China under Mao Zedong 

Explores the rise and subsequent Communist dictatorship of Mao Zedong. 

  • The fall of the Qing Dynasty and the Warlord Period 

  • Nationalist v Communist and the Long March 

  • The Japanese and the Second World War 

  • The Chinese Civil War 1945-1949 and reason for the Communist victory. 

  • 1949 and the birth of Communist China under Mao Zedong. 

  • Early social and economic reform and the 100 Flowers Campaign 

  • The Great Leap Forward and the Great Famine 

  • The Cultural Revolution 

  • The role of the dictator and the Cult of Mao 

 Topic 2. Conflict in Vietnam.  

  • The early history of Vietnam and the advent and impact of colonial rule. 

  • The emergence of Vietnamese resistance, the Communists and Ho Chi Minh.  

  • The first and second Indo-Chinese war: Causes and consequences. 

  • The failure of the US to secure victory: 

  • Failure of modern warfare 

  • Viet Cong guerrilla strategy and the Tet Offensive 

  • The secret war in Cambodia and Laos

  • The Home Front 

  • The Peace Movement 

  • Peace negotiations

  • Australia’s role in the Vietnam War. 

  • The Battle of Long Tan
